The Mariner's Cross is a stylized cross in the shape of an anchor. The Mariner's Cross is also referred to as St. Clement's Cross in reference to the way he was martyred. The cross often features the Passion of the Christ or a depiction of the Virgin Mary (Virgen de Guadalupe).

Pope Clement I (called CLEMENS ROMANUS to distinguish him from the Alexandrian), is the first of the successors of St. Peter of whom anything definite is known, and he is the first of the "Apostolic Fathers". He was sent to a labor camp on the coast of the Black Sea, where he built many churches and converted many prisoners. Finally, he was thrown into the sea with a heavy rock tied around his neck. One year after his martyrdom, the sea receded some two miles and it was seen that Angels of the Lord had built for St. Clement a marble tomb. This once-per-year withdrawing of the waters from the coast so that pilgrims could venerate his sacred tomb continued for over 600 years. His feast is celebrated November 23rd. He has left one genuine writing, a letter to the Church of Corinth, and many others have been attributed to him.
