Saint Barbara was the exceptionally beautiful daughter of a heathen lord in Asia Minor who converted to Christianity and was put to death for doing so by her own father. On his way home from beheading his own daughter, her father was struck by lightning and his body was completely destroyed. For this reason, St. Barbara is the patron saint of storms and artillerymen as she is prayed to for both protection from thunderstorms as well as protection from field munitions accidents (explosions & the resulting fires)
